Once you paid wrongly, you are at the mercy of the receiver to you initiate another back payment if he is honest. For this reason, deal only with reputable organizations and individuals
As Bitcoin continues to gain ground, businesses may be able to track the payment requests they are displaying. For now, Bitcoin can detect typos and the system may not effect the payment if you don’t enter a valid Bitcoin address.

Bitcoin trading is not private by default

You are to go the extra mile in protecting your Bitcoin privacy. This is because every transaction in Bitcoin is stored permanently in the public Bitcoin network. This means that all users will see the balance of any Bitcoin address. Of course, they may not be able to know the identity of the user of the address until the Bitcoin is used and information has to be revealed. That is why you must not use a Bitcoin address more than once for the sake of security.

Bitcoin is still being improved

Being a new currency, one advantage of Bitcoin is that it is still experimental. You can make a lot of money now in the system before the system gets tightened up. This does not mean that the market may have a downturn, it can only get better. But no one can tell for sure what becomes of Bitcoin’s tomorrow.
What we know for sure is that it is still being developed and each next level produces new challenges as more and more people adopt Bitcoin. This increases the opportunity for the expert Bitcoin traders. Don’t panic at this time if you experience increased fees, slower confirmations, and other seemingly tough issues. Speak with the expert Bitcoin traders before you make a consequential investment in Bitcoin.

 Dealing with tax regimes

While there is nothing legal or illegal about Bitcoin, you should expect the government to come up with taxes and regulations on Bitcoin, though it is not a currency of any nation. But government’s desperation for IGR will cause them to beam their search light on your earnings, alternative income, payroll, and capital profits and they will expect you to pay tax on any and all of them. You must know how to find your way in this regard so that you will not be on the wrong side of the law in Bitcoin earnings.

1.    Be selective of the online services

Just like you would not just open and keep your hard currency with just any bank, you should be careful who you are going to keep your Bitcoin wallet with. Any services that keep your Bitcoin wallet online are not worth it. Their security can be compromised and they do not provide enough insurance and guarantee. So when choosing, be very careful and selective. It is recommended that you use two-factor authentication.

2.    Don’t keep all your eggs in one basket

I doubt it if you would keep a cash of 1,000 dollars in your pocket or wallet. Since a Bitcoin wallet contains your money, you might need to determine how much you want to keep there. It is advisable for you to keep only a small amount of Bitcoin that you need for daily uses in your Bitcoin wallet. In line with this, while you have a little of your Bitcoin on your computer, mobile, or server for the regular transaction, keep the remainder in a safer environment.

3.    Backing up your wallet

Since you need to keep your Bitcoin wallet safe, you need to back it up because of unforeseen circumstances like theft, accident or other misfortunes. Computers can crash anytime and mistakes have no master. If you back up your Bitcoin wallet, you will be able to recover it. Your Bitcoin will be intact if your wallet is encrypted.

•    Have entire wallet backed up
In some Bitcoin wallets, there are private keys hidden internally. For you to be able to recover your entire Bitcoin, make sure you create a backup of, not only the private keys for your visible Bitcoin addresses, but also the entire wallet. If not, you will not be able to recover a great part of your funds with your backup.
•    Encrypt online backups
If you decide to store your backup online, make sure it is encrypted for more security. This is because
activities of hacker and the attack of malware, spyware and other malicious software can expose what you backup online.
•    Have duplicate backups
Anything can happen to the remaining Bitcoin that you store somewhere else if you do not have any duplicate. Why not consider backing it up with USB keys, discs or even in hard copy on paper. The chances that of them getting damaged at the same time is very rare. If one is damaged, you can still recover your Bitcoin by resorting to the other backup.

•    Do backups regularly
To keep your Bitcoin wallet as current as ever, you need to do the backup regularly. This will ensure that your Bitcoin wallet includes the most recent Bitcoin addresses change and all new Bitcoin addresses created.

4.   Your password must be strong

The stronger your password, the harder it is for hackers to break. The system will advise you about the strength of your password, if it is weak, medium, strong, or very strong. If it contains only letters or a recognizable work traceable to you it is considered very weak. A strong password should be made of a combination of letters, numbers, punctuation marks, symbols, and must have up to 16 characters.

5.   Don’t forget your password

Your password is the key to the funds in your wallets. There is a very few, if any at all, password recovery option in Bitcoin network. Bear in mind then that, if you forget your password, it’s a good-bye to your funds. Therefore, while selecting a password, select the one you can always remember even after months or years of not accessing your wallet. You may find it harder to memorize a very strong password, so it is not a bad idea to write it down and keep it confidentially.

6.    Try out offline wallet

A viable option is the offline wallet, also known as cold storage. It gives the highest level of security for Bitcoin savings. An offline Bitcoin wallet is about storing your wallet in a system that is not connected to Bitcoin network or any network. This will protect your fund from any unwarranted access.

7.      Always update your Bitcoin software

Like any dynamic software, Bitcoin is being updated from time to time. If you are using the latest version of your Bitcoin software, you will have access to the key and security fixes. New updates always have new useful features that can enhance the security of your wallet and prevent problems of different degrees. Therefore, always have the latest update of your Bitcoin installed.

8.      Multi-signature protection against theft

There is a multi-signature feature in Bitcoin. If you activate it, your transactions in Bitcoin will always require multiple independent approvals before it can be completed. This is especially useful for organizations. They may be able to grant their members the access their treasury while programming it is the signature of a specific number of members that will effect spending. Some provide this multi-signature wallet to other users so that they will be able to control the use of their Bitcoin as such that it can be rendered ineffectual in the case of theft.

If this approach is taken by one and all, there is less likelihood of your Bitcoin being stolen successfully or your wallet being lost irrecoverably.

15 Bitcoin Common Questions & Answers

In 1998, when Wei Dai on the cypherpunks included cryptocurrency in a mailing list, he looked unserious. When he muted the idea of a new form of currency without a central issuing and regulating authority, he seemed like a joker. Since 2010, when Bitcoin became a reality, there has been 1001 questions about it. Here you have only 15 of them addressed.

1.    What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is an entirely digital currency operated online. It is the first of its kind, decentralizedP2P paymentnetwork with the power of control vested in the users. There are no central regulatory authorities or middlemen. A Bitcoin user sees it as a merely the cash online. It can also be described as the most prominent triple entry bookkeeping system ever devised.

2.    Who controls the Bitcoin network?

In practice, the users are the controllers of the Bitcoin network. Nobody can claim the ownership of the network just like nobody can claim the ownership of the email system. It’s a fact that some have sat down to develop the software and keep improving it, they don’t control it. They can’t compel a change in the Bitcoin protocol because every user is at liberty to choose what software or version he will use.
In order to stay compatible with each other, however, all users need to use software that comply with the same. All users and developers thus have a compelling reason to use software complying with the same rule to stay compatible with each other and maintain this consensus.

3.    How can I acquire Bitcoins?
You can be paid in Bitcoin for goods or services. You can buy Bitcoins on a Bitcoin exchange. You can also exchange Bitcoins with another user near you. A greater amount of Bitcoins is earned by the competitive mining. You may as well find those who want to trade their Bitcoins in for a credit card or PayPal payment.

4.    Are businesses really using Bitcoin?
Yes. More and more businesses and individuals are using Bitcoin. Offline industries like food, property, legal, manufacturing and finances are accepting it as a means of transferring funds. Too numerous to be counted are the online businesses and services who not only use, but also prefer Bitcoin as a mode of payment. These include internationals like Namecheap, WordPress, and Reddit.
Though, still in its infancy, it is notwithstanding a fast growing currency. Statistics has it that as of August 2013, there was $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin in circulation and millions of dollars worth of Bitcoin being spent daily. What about now?

5.    Why is Bitcoin a trusted currency?

All features of Bitcoin themselves have earned it the trust it deserves. Bitcoin as a currency has a fully open source and is decentralized with nothing to hide. Every user has access to all its source code at any time he or she is trading. Knowledge of Bitcoin workability is not vague to any who really wants to key into it.
The entire transactions and Bitcoins ever issued can be openly consulted real time by any interested user. You don’t have to rely on a third party to effect any payment and the entire system is guarded by heavily peer-reviewed cryptographic algorithms with features of those used for online banking. Since no organization or individual that controls the network, Bitcoin is secured and can be trusted.

6.    What if I lose my Bitcoins?
If you lost your Bitcoin wallet, you have in effect, withdrawn the amount of Bitcoin in that wallet from circulation. No one else can use it. It remains dormant forever lying in the blockchain. There is no way for another user to discover the private key that can be used to access and spend the fund in the wallet.

7.    Is Bitcoin legal?
While it is not a legal tender, Bitcoin has not been outlawed by any governmental authority anywhere the world over. Though some countries may place restriction on all foreign currencies, the move is not against cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

Rather than banning it, some countries are coming up with regulations guiding individuals and businesses on how to incorporate the Bitcoin technology into their formal, regulated financial system.

8.    Can Bitcoin be regulated?
.
It depends. However, it would take nearly all the users, who decide the software they use to modify the Bitcoin protocol itself. It is impossible for a country to arrogate to itself the right to regulate a worldwide currency. A government can only regulate how it is to be used in its own jurisdiction. And if it makes it difficult in its own country, it is only shifting the technological and financial opportunity elsewhere.
An indirect control may arise if a wealthy organization chooses to invest in mining hardware to control major computing power of the network and have the capacity to reverse recent transactions. Still, it is in theory rather than in practice because such organisation will have to invest more than all other miners in the world combined.

9.    Will I be required to pay taxes on Bitcoin earnings?
Bitcoin does not have a fiat currency status of legal tender of any nation so its earnings cannot be taxed, However, taxing systems of many lands are capable of taxing any transaction irrespective how the means. So if there is an increase in income, sales, payroll, capital gains, or some other form of tax implication because of Bitcoin transaction, expect it to be taxed.

10.    Is it easy to make payments with Bitcoin?
Yes. It is even easier to make payments in Bitcoin than it is to make payments in debit or credit card purchases. Bitcoin payments can be received without any merchant account. They are made directly from a Bitcoin wallet, an application that you run on your computer or your smartphone. Once you entered the recipient’s Bitcoin address and the amount to be paid and press send, you are making payments. For ease of obtaining recipients address, you may use a QR code to obtain it or you use NFC by placing the two phone side-by-side.

11.    Is it possible for someone to buy up all the existing Bitcoins?

Since only a fraction of Bitcoins issued can be found on the exchange markets for sale, it is nearly impossible for someone to buy them up. The Bitcoin markets are highly competitive and highly elastic and responsive to the market price. Another basis for this confidence is that new Bitcoins will always be issued. For that reason, even a determined buy will not be able to buy up all the Bitcoins in existence. Even any attempt to manipulate the market will take a significant amount of money.

12.    How is the Bitcoin’s price fixed?
The market forces of demand and supply determine the price of Bitcoin. The higher the demand for Bitcoin, the higher its price, and vice versa. The rate of new Bitcoins creation is predictable, so there is only a limited number of Bitcoins in circulation. This means that for the price to be stable the demand must follow the level of inflation. Because the Bitcoin is still a promising market, its price could be very volatile.

13.    Is Bitcoin another Ponzi scheme?
No. Bitcoin does not operate like a fraudulent Ponzi scheme where investors are paid returned from their own money or the fund paid by subsequent investors. It is rather a free software digital currency with no central authority. No one is therefore empowered to make fraudulent representations about investment returns.
Though a speculative currency, there is a free float of Bitcoin exchange just like gold, dollar, euro, and yen among other currencies. That creates volatility of Bitcoin transactions. Apart from being a speculative tool, it is also an electronic payment system that has useful and competitive attributes that are being used by thousands of users and businesses.

14.    Is it possible to receive a Bitcoin when I am offline?
Yes. If you are paid when you are offline, the Bitcoin will be displayed the next time you start your Bitcoin walletapplication. This is made possible because Bitcoins are actually received into your address and not by your computer software. They are recorded in a public ledger that is shared by all the devices connected to the network.

So if you are paid in Bitcoin when your wallet client programme off, the next time you launch it, will download the blocks and catch up with any transaction that occurred against your address while you were offline.
15.     Why do I always have to wait for confirmation?
This is simply because there is some delay before the network begins to confirm your transaction and add it to a block. Receiving notification of a payment is almost instant with Bitcoin. However, notification of a payment is almost instant with Bitcoin. Yet payment confirmation will require a consensus on the network that the Bitcoins you received haven’t been sent to anyone else.

The answers to this question should give you more confidence in the viability of the Bitcoin. Go ahead and begin your transaction without further delay.

 ENROLMENT OPTIONS

There are basically three options for enrolment which are (1) Self Service (2) Assisted Service and (3) Mobile Service

Self Service

The self-service option is also referred to as “walk in and do it yourself” process. If you are opting for this, you as a NIN applicant will just walk to a nearby Enrolment Centre and pick up an Enrolment Form.
It is self-service because you do not need the assistance of any officer to fill the form. It is only after you have filled in the form that you will submit to the enrolment officer who will capture your biometric data and use the data you put in your Enrolment Form to process your enrolment.

This option is summarized in the following seven steps:

1.    Walk in to an Enrolment Centre to pick up an Enrolment Form
2.    Fill in your demographic and any other required information into the Enrolment Form
3.    Submit the form to the Enrolment officer. He or she will input your details into Enrolment Application, the computer programme being used for the enrolment
4.    You will have to verify and confirm the data transferred from your form to the system to be sure that the information represents you
5.    Next is the capturing of your biometric data. This will include your headshot photograph, fingerprints of the 10 fingers, and signature
6.    Then, any of the 8 the supporting documents mentioned earlier will be scanned and attached to your data
7.    Wait a few seconds for your enrolment to be acknowledged. This Enrolment Application will confirm this by generating and printing out two  slips, namely (2) Transaction Slip and (2) NIN Slip

Assisted Service

In the option of assisted service, you will just “walk in and get assistance from a Support Officer.” It is similar to the self-service option. The only difference here is that it is provided for the applicants that cannot fill Enrolment Form for any reason.
A Support Officer is there at the Enrolment Centre to assist such applicant to correctly fill into the form the required personal information. After that, the seven steps above will be followed.

Mobile Service

This option presupposes that there are Mobile Enrolment Stations in every neighbourhood. If that is true in your own environment, the Mobile Service will work for your and process is quite convenient.
It involves you enrolling for your NIN by walking to the Mobile Enrolment Stations around you during any working hour. In this process, you will request an Enrolment Form and complete it with your data if you are able. If you are not able, a Support Officer is there to provide assistance.
The station is equipped to complete the process and this is done after your biometric data has been captured and the data in your enrolment form is filled into the system by the Mobile Enrolment Officer.

Take note that this process is entirely free. You are not supposed to pay any amount for any process, either at the Enrolment Centre or at the Mobile Enrolment Station. Do not let any unscrupulous officer play a smart
one on you. Some may request for an assistance fee or some processing fee to print out your slips.
You can keep in expectation of your card.

So below is how to setup ADB and Fastboot on your Windows PC.

In other to install ADB and Fastboot on your windows PC, it is essential you download  and install the Java Development Kit (JDK) which can be downloaded here.  After installing that, you can now proceed to the next step below,

How To Set Up ADB & Fastboot For Android On Windows

First and foremost download the Android SDK  toolkit and set up path variables.
Step 1: Head over to this link to download the latest version of Android SDK.
Step 2: Extract the contents of the downloaded file to your hard drive. Within the unzipped “sdk” folder, you’ll find another folder labeled platform-tools. Since we’re interested in only ADB and Fastboot, this is the one that we’re looking for.
Step 3: Move the platform-tools folder to a convenient location on your PC. The root of C: drive is usually a good idea. I also recommend renaming the folder to something easier, like C:\Android-adb.

By this point, ADB is essentially set up, but to use it, you’ll first need to navigate your command prompt window to this Android-adb folder, and then run all ADB commands inside it. Since it’s too much hassle for most users, we’ll add this location to Windows’ System Path Variable, so you can run ADB commands from anywhere.
Step 4: Right-click the Computer icon on your desktop, and go to Properties.

Step 5: Under System Properties, go to the Advanced tab, and click Environment Variables.

Step 6: The system variables are contained within the lower pane. Locate “Path” here, highlight it, and click the Edit button.

Step 7: There will already be a string of locations here; navigate to the very end, and add the following text (assuming that you have chosen C:\Android-adb as the folder; otherwise, enter whatever path you’ve located adb at):
;C:\Android-adb
Click OK, finally.

Your ADB folder is now configured, and you can run both ADB and Fastboot commands from anywhere in command prompt. To verify, connect your Android device to PC with USB Debugging enabled, launch a command prompt window, and type “adb devices” (without quotes). The daemon will start up, and all connected devices will be listed.

How to Enrol Online for NIMC & Get Your ID Card

National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has been empowered to issue National Identity Number (NIN) the actual National ID. To make the whole process easier, provision has been made for whoever is able to register his or her demographic data online.
There is a segment called Pre-registration Portal in the National Identity Management System (NIMS), an online programme used in conducting the registration. From the comfort of your home, you can do the pre-enrolment for yourself. This involves the following 4 processes.

You Want to Read Also:  Get You National ID Card the Snap of Fingers

STEP 1

Visit the NIMC pre-enrolment website, which is https://penrol.nimc.gov.ng  to access the Pre-Enrolment Portal. There you will see the online pre-enrolment web form. To be able to fill this form, you will have to create your user account and get a username and password. With this, you will be able to access your data in the future if you need to update any information or in case something changes in your data.

STEP 2

Fill the Enrolment Form online and supply the required data. There are 8 categories of data that you will fill here and you will come across each one under 8 different tabs. They are as follows:
•    Personal Details
•    Address Info
•    Parents Data
•    Next of Kin Data
•    Origin Data
•    Document Data
•    Disability Data and
•    Physical Features

In each of the features, some fields are compulsory; if you don’t fill them, you can proceed to next stage. Therefore you need to have all your information handy before you continue.
At any point, you are at liberty to save and quit if you are not sure of something. After you have ascertained it, you can then come back to the portal, using your username and password you earlier created and continue with your data processing.

STEP 3

Crosscheck all the information you typed in and rule out any typo. At each stage you have three options of “cancel”, “back” and “proceed”. If you have made any mistake, you can always click “back” and correct any mistake you spotted.

Read Also: 15 Reasons Why Reasons Why You Must Have Identification Number & Card

STEP 4

You will print out the generated 2 bar code that is included in the summary sheet. In the sheet, you will come across a message in the letterhead of the NIMC that reads thus, “Dear So and So, you have successfully registered your demographics on the National Identification Management System (NIMS) Pre-registration Portal . . . . .”

The unique barcode will appear on the bottom of the page. Please keep the Pre-Enrolment Barcode Output carefully because a barcode reader can read the code and have access to your personal information.
As soon as you are able, take the slip to the Enrolment Office closest to you. You will take along any Proof of Identification, which may be any of International Passport, Driving License, and Birth Certificate.

This supporting document will be scanned at the Enrolment Office or Mobile Enrolment Centre and attached to the data you have earlier typed in.

Then, your biometric (your headshot photograph and the 10 fingerprints) will be captured.
Your registration is completed when you have been given a Transaction Slip and a NIN Slip (containing your NIN).

Ideally and in principle, your card is supposed to be delivered to you at the address you supplied. However, for any security reason, you may have to the collection centre go and pick it up after proving that you are the owner. Though you will be notified if the card is ready, but you can always track the progress of your card at www.nimc.gov.ng.

I will tell you about the acronyms being used in the process in a later post.

How To Configure Your-Freedom To Use Static/Dedicated IP(PayPal Advantage)

$

0
Chances are that you’re reading this because you’re interested in obtaining a static IP address for some reasons which is best known to you.

What is an IP Address?

Wikipedia defines an Internet Protocol (IP) address as a “numerical label assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.” I realise these aren’t layman terms. For a better understanding, I recommend you read this document at gnome.org

Advantages of Securing a Static IP Address

Remote Access: With a static IP address you can access your PC regardless of your location in the world. Using programs such as OpenSSH and Remote Administrator, you enjoy the convenience of accessing your work or home PC wherever you are.
Server Administration: Cloud services providers such as Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud offer customers the ability to lock down certain services and ports to desired IP addresses to improve security. And you can also build a firewall locking down sensitive property to select IP addresses.
IP Cameras: You will need a static IP address to reach your cameras when you are away. Picture this, if you had to call someone but didn’t have their phone number or it had been changed with no forwarding number to call, how would you reach them? The static IP gives you that same number all time. That said there are other ways to connect from the outside by using a DDNS system.
There are several other benefits to retaining a public IP address such as being able to host services from your home / work computer and so on. A google search will reveal more.
It’s safe to assume most Internet surfers value anonymity online because that is what makes the Internet a unique experience. For the first time in history, people from around the world with access to a computer have been able to connect to each other, communicate, and share information without having to disclose personal information. On the Internet your alias is your identity. It is this opportunity to remain anonymous that has allowed many people to practice freedom of speech and use the Internet as a tool of expression.
There are some reasons we might want to connect to the internet anonymously or by using a static/dedicated IP which is different from our original location IP.
To remain anonymous online there is a need for proxy tunnel software like your-freedomYour-Freedom is just a flexible anonymizer and anti-censorship tool. It easily bypasses firewall as long as you get the configuration remains correct. It is described by the publisher as ‘internet most sophisticated proxy tunneling solution’. Before you can use this software, you need to create a free account with the publisher. The chosen username and password will allow you to access to all your freedom’s servers.

List of Your-Freedom Servers

1. Download and Install Your-Freedom Software on your Computer. How to Setup Your-Freedom

2. Launch it and skip the tutorial section.

3. Click on configure. A new page showup. In the space for address, input any your-freedom server from the list above eg. ems01.your-freedom.de
You can select any connection mode that suites you but https is ok. Mark the required options as shown in the image below as well.

4. Click on the “Account Information” tab and fill in your login details if provided you have already register an account.

5. If you are connecting to the internet through a proxy, click on the “Proxy Settings” tab and fill in your proxy and port.

6. Click on Save and Exit. You may now go back to “Status” tab and start connection. Once connection starts the door at the right-hand side will open as shown below.

7. Set browsers and applications proxy settings to . This can be done on firefox by going to Options >> Advanced >> Network >> Click on settings under connection >> Choose manual proxy settings and fill it as shown below.

For Chrome Users, Go to Settings >> Show advance settings >> Change Proxy Settings under Network >> Now it depends on how your connect to the internet, if you connect through modem locae the modem name in dialup settings but if it is a wireless network just use the LAN settings.

Fill the space as shown below.

Now visit whoer.net to confirm your ip address has changed to what it displays in your-fredom dashboard. If done you are good to go if not re-check and find where you made mistake. If any problem don't hesitate to add a comment below.

If you encountered any problem or have any question, you can make use of the comment section below.
NB:This same process is applicable to Opening a verified South Africa PayPal account which can also receive and send funds.  Meanwhile, in the case of South Africa(ZA) Paypal account you can register the account directly with Nigerian IP. Infrastructural Deficiency

On several occasions, people have filed out of their homes in a bid to register and they were unable to do so. In some cases, the registrants are told that there is no Internet connectivity at the registration centre at that moment. In other cases, the complaint is about the electric power failure. Others go and are told that the equipment are simply not functioning well. There are instances of the machine’s inability to capture the fingerprints of the registrants are not a few.

However, this need not be because NIM said they have provided all of this equipment have had a lot of collaborations with local government authorities to make them serviceable.

Insufficient registration centres

Another challenge is that registration centres are not sufficient. So many people complained that they have never set their eyes on either a registration centre or the registration officers. However, NIMC keeps announcing the location of their registration centres. It is on their official website http:// www.nimc.gov.ng that there are registration centres in every local government areas of the country.

Yet, it may not be enough to have just one centre in one local government. This challenge too need not stop you. If you have a good Internet signal where you live, you can initiate the enrolment by conducting the pre-enrolment online. Learn more about to do this byclicking here.

Exploiters

A lot unscrupulous of business centres and individuals are taking an advantage of the situations above to exploit Nigerians by promising them that they will help them ‘quicken’ the process of registering for the National Identity card. They would issue out forms for them in which they would fill their personal data. This is upon the payment of between ₦200 and ₦500.

They told these unsuspecting victims that the registration would soon end and that if they fail to do register the deadline, they will miss the opportunity and have to pay a huge amount in the future to get it when they need it. They would now promise them to come back after a week to capture their biometrics.

However, NIMC has come out repeatedly that it has not employed any so-called organisation claiming to be collaborating with NIMC to facilitate the process of registering Nigerians. The entire registration process is free. Shun any swindlers.

Privacy

Some worry about those that will have access to their personal information. This is due to the fact that the card will hold vast amounts of information about you: your address (present or formal) your age, who your parents are, your religion, your job and your education. They are not willing to expose such ‘personal properties,’ especially now that is even going to carry your unique fingerprints.
Some worry about how such personal information is shared, claiming that it could be used to easily track one down.

Enforcement

Because the consequences of not having a NIN or ID card have not been mentioned, people are not very serious about registration. And if the card will be used for all that is said to be useful for, what happens in the case of loss.

Nevertheless, there is no need to communicate the penalty of not having it before you are convinced that you need to go and enrol. NIMC has listed the usefulness of the card and this will show you the reasons why you must go quickly and register now.

Read about the reasons you must enrol for NIN and National ID card by clicking here

When your card is ready for collection, you will be contacted through the sms. This ideally should be within two weeks to one month. But, trust the Nigerian factor. Even then, you can check the status of your ID card before you are contacted. You will know if it has been printed, dispatched to the Activation Centre or not. This you can do by visiting https://touch.nimc.gov.ng.

Be quick, brave all these challenges, go now and enrol.

There are instances you might want to transfer files, documents or medias from your Android device to your Computer, this can be achieved by establishing a connection between your device and the Computer. A USB Cable Connection is the best medium to use for this, if your device is detected once connected you have no problem. But if it is not detected then you have to perform few things before your device can be detected. Once detected and connected you can browse files and documents on your device and its external storage.

Some people don't know they have to activate media storage connection in USB connection settings. The USB connection settings is mostly hidden in all devices, it only comes up on the notification tray once you plugged your Android device to your Computer. All you have to do is plug in the device into your computer with USB, pull down the notification tray and tap on “USB” option. In some cases it might not be USB option, it may show something like “USB charging” or “USB file transfer”. It may vary from devices to devices but it will talk about something USB.

After tapping on the USB option, a popup will display asking you what you want to use USB for, just select the option with Transfer Files or Transfer Media Files or Transfer Files (MTP) it use to vary in most of the Android devices.

If you have tried the above steps and your device is still not connected then your Computer have a driver problem. You have to firstly confirm that your Computer is detecting an MTP device but not recognizing it. Go to Control Panel >> Hardware and Sound >> View Devices and Printers. If you see your device under “Unspecified” then your computer needs driver update for the device. It may show under Unspecified as either MTP device or Unknown USB Device. I tested this with 2 Android device, both show in unspecified section one display as Unknown USB device and one with no name at all. You can see that in the screenshot below.

Note:If your device didn't show up in devices and printers, try to activate USB debugging mode. To activate USB debugging go to Settings >> About Phone >> Continue Tapping on Build Number until you see a message that says "you are now a developer". Go back to Settings >> Developer Options and Activate USB debugging. SO your device must show up in device and printer page now.
Now all you have to do is to update the Android device driver on your Computer. Let's get started with that.
1. Press Window button on your keyboard and search for Device Manager.

2. Launch Device Manager, the device will show list of systems drivers working on your Computer. Kindly look for where your device shows up, in my own case I found it in other devices and Android device. Yours might vary just make sure you locate it.

3. Right-click on it and select update driver software.

4. A pop will display just select "Browser my Computer for Driver Software"

5. On the next page, choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my Computer" and click on Next.

6. You have to select your device type on the next page, just choose Android Device and click on Next.

7. Here you have to select the driver software you want to install. Choose MTP USB Deviceand click on Next.

8. Wait till the driver got installed. You should receive a success message like the one in the screenshot below.

Device is now detected and ready for File Transfer.

However, you may be completely discouraged if you keep coming across some terms and acronyms during the self-assisted process of NIDC registration or while otherwise reading about it. In order not to be pissed off, we have compiled a list of some of those acronyms and what they stand. Read on to find out.

1.    NIMC: This stands for National Identity Management Commission. They are the body established by the Act 23 of 2007 as the main legal and regulatory agency and institutional mechanism for compiling and managing the identity of all eligible Nigerians as contained in the National Policy and in the Sections 1,2,5 and 6 of NIMC Act. It replaces the former DNCR.

2.    DNCR: It stands for the Department for National Civic Registration. This was the agency that issued the former National ID card that many people are carrying about. It was dissolved and replaced with the current NIMC to conduct a more permanent registration that goes beyond the issuance of ordinary cards.

3.    NIMS: This means the National Identity Management System. It is the main software which was developed by the NIMC for the conduct of the entire process of enrolment to the point of production of the card. It operates online and offline, and presently has the capacity to enrol at least, 300 million individual registrants.

4.    NID: It is National Identity Database being which functions as a complement of CIDR.

5.    CIDR: This is known as the Central Identity Repository or Register. It is the identity database for the NIMS. It is a chip-based and secure identity card and also a network of access and means to accurately prove or assert the identity of each person on the database.

 6.    NIN: This means the National Identification Number. It is a non-intelligent set of numbers that will be assigned to each one when he has been successfully enrolled. Your NIN is unique and cannot be used by another person. Without your ID card, you can still present your NIN for a concrete prove of your personality.
One of the main objectives of the NIMC is to have all eligible Nigerians registered and generate an identification number for them. This number helps to link a person to all his records in the database and confirm his identity.

7.    CAD: This means Card Access Devices. Upon the production of the card, it can be read by a set of machines referred to CAD. This feature of the ID card makes it possible to transact business with the card. It also makes it possible to verify the authenticity of the card, thus preventing identity theft and renders fake identity cards useless if ever produced.

8.    ID: It is the short form of the Identity or Identity Card. The final stage of registration is the issuance of the Identity Card itself. Your being given an ID card is the conclusive and tangible proof of the fact that your data is in the CIDR of the NIMC.

9.    FEP: This acronym stands for Front-End Partners. These make available field registration possible without the individual having to go to the office of NIMC in their local government area. Though their job is mostly outsourced, they are under strict supervision of the NIMC.

10.    LEA: This stands for the Law Enforcement Agencies. The relevance of these in the NIMS is that they are one of the statutory bodies to be given access to the relevant portion of the system as they may need the identity of any Nigerian for adequate enforcement of various laws. Their involvement will deter any identity theft. This also makes it harder for criminals to use false or multiple, ghost or duplicate identities.

11.    PIA: Private Impact Assessment. This is the assessment or study conducted by the NIMC before they started collecting individual’s data. It provides the assurance that the data submitted will not be compromised. Even if your card is lost with so much information on it, your identity is not automatically stolen courtesy PIA. The PIA has shown the impact the data collected will have on the individual.

12.    PIVS: This is Personal Identification Verification Service. Your National Identification Number, the bar code on your pre-enrolment slip, and your fingerprints, among others serve in different context and circumstances to complement your PIVS.

Your understanding of all these will maximise your use and benefit from the card you are enrolling to collect and minimize your difficulties in the self-assisted method.

If it is true that the more you know, the more you know you don’t know, then with all you have read about NIMC, NIMS, NIN and ID card, you surely must have some questions. I have taken some time to listen to what folks are asking about NIMC national ID card registration and researched out the answers for them. Do enjoy reading the answers to such questions that may concern you.

1.    Why do I Need to Have My Fingerprints and Pictures Captured?

Under the NIN System, the number assigned to you is used to electronically tie together all your basic identifying details like fingerprints and face. It is not possible to steal, forge or lose the combination of all of these. These features are not likely to change soon. But your face may change as you age.
That is why years later you may need to walk back to the NIMC Registration Centre and have your face captured again. Since all these biometric data are unique to you, need to have them recorded to authenticate your identification.

2.    How Will My Personal Information Be Stored?

They will be stored in the National Identity Database in such a way that it will neither be exposed nor be lost. You will be able to use it anywhere in the country to prove your identity. Your personal data will not be accessible to anybody or corporate organisation not empowered by the law without your expressed consent and unequivocal authorization of the NIMC.

Be informed though that there are some governmental agencies referred to as LEA (law enforcement agencies) like security, immigration, police, financial crime control agencies who are granted access to your data by the NIMC Act. At the same time, be rest assured that they will neither use nor release your information without a competent court order. And only the high-ranking officers of such agencies can be granted such permission.

3.    What If There Is Any Change in Your Personal Information?

There is a provision to update or amend your records on a legitimate ground, not for the sake of cloaking your identity to escape a criminal prosecution. For example, it is expected that a lady will change her surname after the change in marital status, your home address and employment (and status) may also change.
You simply need to fill a Change of Records request form online at www.nimc.gov.ng, print out the usual summary sheet and take it to any Registration Centres, or go the centre and fill a Change of Records form with or without assistance.
After verifying your identity against the existing records, the update will be added to your existing information. Thus, you maybe identified by both the previous and the new data.

4.    What Guarantee Is There That My Privacy Is Intact?

NIMC has conducted a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) to understand the level of risks to the individuals whose data are being collected for the purpose of identification. Based on their findings, they have taken some measures to protect them.
For instance, all those given access to some parts of the NIMS Database are to report the use of the data they have access to. They are also to report periodically to the NIMC how they have been safeguarding the information at their disposal. In short, the system is so comprehensive that it is capable of tracking the use and abuse of personal data and track down the user.

5.    How Soon Will NIN Be Issued for Me?

The NIMS architecture is designed in such a way that your NIN can be generated within seconds. Once your enrolment and the de-duplication processes are concluded and the data is received at the DATA Centre, your NIN is ready in a few seconds. However, your delivery channel (sms, email, or courier service) may determine how soon you will receive it. That means, it may take minutes, hours or days, in some cases, for your NIN to be ready.

6.    Will an ID Card Still Be Issued for Me?

While your NIN will call up your entire identity upon its presentation to the entitled stakeholders, your card presents a more flexible, more useful and more convenient way of proving your identity in different context and circumstances. It does not require any technology to identify yourself with your card in many cases. That is why an Id Card will still be issued for you.

However, it will be naïve to conclude that because you have other cards identifying you, there is a little or no need for a National Id card. The NIMC ID card is coded with the highest level security features that conform to various international standards (ISO 27001, ICAO 9303). Using a Card Access Device (CAD), it provides a conclusive proof of your personage in any level of dealings—financial or otherwise.

7.    How Soon Will I Get My ID Card?

In principle, it takes no more than one month to get your card to you after your biometrics has been captured. It may take less than that (may be two weeks) if you go and pick it up yourself because the cards are produced en mass a week after the complete data have been entered and submitted.

To allay the fear that your Id card may be given to a wrong person, the NIMC have taken some security measures to get the card to its owners. Cards are released only after a series of security and clearance checks have been conducted.

This invariably rules out a collection by proxy. Of course, you can track the progress of your card production online. And you will also be notified by an e-mail or sms when your card is due for collection.

8.    How Will the ID Card Look Like?

The National Identity Card is designed to conform to the international standard in all its features. In fact, it is a smart card with chips which contain the holder’s personal information, his NIN, signature, image and his fingerprints that are conspicuous enough to facilitate visual identification. Its security designed has taken its production above the fakers. The chip enables it to be read by CADs.

9.    How Will I Use My NIN and ID Card?

You are involved in different forms of transactions day in day out. This requires you to prove your identity or to submit a means of identification in case of resolution or reconciliation. Section 27 of NIMC Act of 2007 mandates all Nigerian residents and corporate citizens to respect a National Identity Card upon confirming its authenticity..

If in doubt, the doubting party may use the NIN on the card to call up the true identity of the owner online. A Card Access Device may also be used to verify the ownership of the card.

10.    What If I Forget My NIN?

It’s not yet over. You will be able to get it from the Registration Centre and you will be guided on how to get it back. You can as well fill out NIN Information Request Form online and take it any of the NIMC Contact Centres.

11.    What If My Card is Lost or Damaged?

It is better to keep your ID Card. But if you suspect that it is stolen, lost or damaged, immediately report at any of the NIMC offices close to where you are. The card and its components will be deactivated against your identity. It then becomes just any card to the carrier. It cannot be used by anyone in any situation where a validity check is required.

Of course, whether cancelled or not, your NIN cannot be used by any other person. You may apply to NIMC by filling out a Card Replacement Request form online at www.nimc.gov.ng. Once the Enrolment Officer concludes the verification of your identity against the existing record he will process the replacement.

This will take a maximum of 7 days. Of course, you are to pay for the replacement to impress the importance carefulness.

12.    Am I to Pay for the ID Card?

No. The entire process of enrolment and the issuance of NIN and ID card is free. Let no one play a fast one on you. However, if you have lost, damaged or have your card stolen, you will pay if you apply for a replacement. This cost will be clearly stated and it is subjected to periodic review.

I believe with these questions adequately answered, any doubt, apprehension or reluctance from any quarters about NIMC, NIMS, NIN or ID card will be adequately taken care of.
